I Asked Lina AI vs Doing It Myself โ€” One Week Side-By-Side

I'm a journalist who covers travel tech. To stress-test the "AI travel agent" category honestly, I planned the same trip two ways: through Lina AI on Zeniva, and manually using my normal stack (Google Flights + Booking.com + resort direct sites). Same dates, same destination, same parameters. Let's see what actually happens.

The trip

5 nights in Cancun (Riviera Maya area), 2 adults, all-inclusive resort, May 12-17, 2026. Departure from Newark (EWR). Budget cap: $3,500 total. Resort tier: 4-star or better, no party-focused properties (we're 40-something).

METHOD 1: Lina AI (Zeniva)

Total time spent: 11 minutes

I opened /chat and typed: "5-night all-inclusive Cancun for 2 adults May 12-17 from Newark, $3,500 budget cap, 4-star+, not party-focused, 40-something couple."

Lina responded in 7 seconds with 3 options:

I asked: "Why Excellence over Hyatt Ziva?" Lina: "Excellence is adults-only and quieter โ€” fits 'not party-focused'. Hyatt Ziva accepts families which means more kids around the pools. If quiet is the priority, Excellence wins."

I picked Excellence. Confirmed dates, picked king bed + ocean view, confirmed dietary preferences (none). Total: $2,940. Booked in 4 more minutes.

METHOD 2: DIY booking

Total time spent: 2 hours 35 minutes (over 3 sessions)

Step 1: Flights (35 minutes)

Google Flights search EWR-CUN May 12-17. Filtered by direct only. JetBlue and Spirit appeared. Spirit was $190 cheaper but I had to research bag fees, seat fees, and the actual all-in cost. JetBlue all-in came to $580/pp; Spirit all-in $510/pp. Saved $140 with Spirit.

Step 2: Hotel research (1 hour 10 minutes)

Booking.com for Cancun all-inclusive 4-star+ adults-only May 12-17. Returned 47 results. I read reviews on the top 8: Excellence Riviera Cancun, Iberostar Grand, Le Blanc Spa Resort, Secrets Maroma, Hotel Xcaret Arte, Sanctuary at Grand Memories, Sandos Caracol, Generations Riviera Maya. Cross-referenced TripAdvisor for each. Settled on Excellence Riviera Cancun.

Booking.com price: $2,180 for 5 nights. Resort direct site: $2,180. Same.

Step 3: Transfers (15 minutes)

Researched USA Transfers, Cancun Airport Transportation, Excellence's own shuttle. Booked Excellence's own private transfer for $90 round-trip.

Step 4: Trip insurance (35 minutes)

Compared Allianz, World Nomads, Travel Guard. Picked Allianz at $89 for both travelers.

Lina was $350 cheaper. That came from Zeniva's negotiated package rate โ€” flight + hotel bundled at a wholesale price not visible on consumer sites.

Where DIY won

Honestly: control. I knew exactly which flights I was booking, which insurance terms I was getting, and the cancellation policy on each component. With Lina, I had to ask follow-up questions to get the same level of detail. (She answered everything I asked.)

Where Lina won

  1. Time: 11 min vs 2h 35min
  2. Price: $350 cheaper through bundling
  3. One vendor for support if anything goes wrong (vs 4 different cancellation policies)
  4. Smart guidance ("not party-focused" โ†’ adults-only filter automatically)

Final verdict

For routine all-inclusive trips, Lina is faster, cheaper, and easier. For complex multi-stop trips where I want to control every variable, I'd still consider DIY โ€” but I'd start with Lina and only DIY the parts where I disagreed with her recommendations.
